Forgewood Housing Co-operative
Forgewood Housing Co-operative Limited was registered with Scottish Homes (now Communities Scotland) in April 1993. The Co-operative acquired 220 tenement properties from Motherwell District Council in January 1994. These properties required considerable upgrading and the area itself suffered from a number of social problems and with a stigma of being a difficult place to live in.
The committee of the Co-operative consisted of a hard core of local residents with a desire for a real change in our area. Many of those original members are still active on our committee today.
Over the years the Co-operative has achieved considerable success in changing the area. At a time when grant money was severely limited, we have managed to carry out works within a reasonable time frame.
The Co-op built 3 new housing developments between 1998 and 2001 as well as a new office central to the community. 76 new homes were built as well as 10 shared ownership properties which have gradually been purchased outright over the years. Our stock now comprises of 142 refurbished flats, 75 new build homes and a factoring service is provided to 15 properties in the area.
The Co-operative is proud of its achievements. We are optimistic about the future having a proven track record and sound financial base.
The Co-operative in conjunction with Garrion People’s Housing Co-operative Limited is involved in an innovative staff sharing agreement, which secures the independence of each organisation while at the same time limits the costs and duplication of resources.
The coming together of the Co-operatives has given us a combination of strengths to provide an improved service to our tenants at the same time ensuring independence for each Co-operative.
We wish to continue working with North Lanarkshire Council and other groups of tenants and the local community to help improve their housing and neighbourhood.
