Cumbernauld Housing Partnership
Cumbernauld Housing Partnership differs from the housing associations in the area, in that it is a company limited by guarantee as opposed to a conventional housing association.
The broad principles are the same, but the Partnership believes that taking this route gives it more flexibility for working in other areas such as economic development. While it is a company that can generate profits these profits cannot be distributed to shareholders, staff etc. Any surplus that is generated has to be reinvested in the company and used to improve housing stock and services. It is also a registered charity.
The Partnership's Board has 15 places on it - eight are reserved for tenants; two for representatives of the Cumbernauld Home Owners Association; three for Council representatives and two for representatives of local community-based organisations. This gives Cumbernauld Housing Partnership a genuine community base. The Partnership took over from Scottish Homes on 13th November 2000. It has around 1800 tenanted properties and also provides a service to around 1200 owner occupiers within Cumbernauld.
The Partnership's aims are to:
- Bring the quality of the housing stock up to modern standards.
- Ensure tenant involvement in the management of their homes by having a broad membership, encouraging tenants to stand for election to the company's board and consulting with local people and, in particular, tenant-led organisations.
- Assist other housing providers in the area to ensure that those in housing need are housed in appropriate properties and at affordable rents.
- Where possible to diversify into other economic regeneration projects.
